Here’s a story out of South Carolina that makes the argument that domestic violence is not given the priority that it should. In that state legislators are filing a bill that would be a good first step in changing that by changing the penalty for the first offense from 30 days to 180 days in jail.
See the story HERE.
“The increase would bring the penalty for domestic violence in line with crimes such as failing to pay a telephone bill or defrauding a hotel. The fact that penny-ante crimes such as these carry higher penalties than domestic violence shows that the state doesn’t take this problem as seriously as it should.”
The story goes on to say that light penalties such as this sends a message to those who commit domestic violence that it isn’t really a serious crime that they don’t have much to worry about-at most a slap on the wrist.
“We can’t tolerate this behavior in our community, and we can’t continue to treat it as if it’s a family issue with which the courts shouldn’t interfere. It’s a critical issue for our state and community, and it has to be addressed.”
