University Campus Sexual Assaults Are Epidemic

Here’s a story from the Enterprise News.com out of tiny Brockton, Massachusetts where the claim that the numbers of sexual assaults on college campuses are staggering. They also are quick to point out that the number of sexual assaults that are reported only represent a tiny minority of those that actually occur because most go unreported.

“The prevalence and pervasiveness of sexual violence, especially among college age women, is alarming and much more extensive than people are aware of,” said Toni Troop, a spokeswoman for Jane Doe Inc., the Massachusetts coalition against sexual assault and domestic violence.

“It is estimated that as many as 20 to 25 percent of women in higher educational institutions have experienced a rape in their college career,” Troop said. “We’re talking about an epidemic.”

Federal law requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses.

The schools are mandated to report crimes as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
