Lawmakers Apply Pressure On Campus Sexual Assaults

This is a story about how a group of Washington lawmakers is pressuring U.S. News & World Report to update its influential college ranking system so that it takes into account universities that have come under fire for failing to adequately handle Sexual Assault cases on campus.

One lawmaker wrote “Institutions that fail to adequately respond to sexual violence should not receive accolades from your publication.”

The basic idea is that parents and students deserve to know which campuses are safe and which have demonstrated a pattern of failing to protect and respond to sexual assaults saying that “U.S. News and World Report should not be giving top marks to institutions that don’t follow the law.”

Officials at U.S. News & World Report have indicated that they are open to the idea and are willing to meet with lawmakers to discuss it.

Hidden Camera Catches Business Burglar

Here’s a story out of the United Kingdom where a suspicious businessman set up hidden cameras at his recruitment firm after it was burglarized.

He could not believe his eyes when he got a text message at home late one night in February warning him to log into his wifi camera system – because he was being ROBBED.

He watched via his smartphone as serial burglar Kevin Corkill, 40, kicked down the door to his office and began helping himself to expensive computers by stuffing them into black bin liners.

“Watching the action unfold through the camera was just incredible.

“Actually seeing it happening live was unnerving, but I felt more empowered knowing I could do something about it.

“I saw the crime taking place and then within a few minutes the police were on site.”

Before the police could arrive Andy had to watch as thief Kevin Corkill kicked down the door to his office and then began calmly looting it for the most expensive equipment he could find.

Cops and dog units from Hertfordshire police began closing in and were on the scene within just 90 seconds.

They caught the suspect red-handed and immediately took him into custody.

He said: “Knowing that the person responsible was caught thanks to a simple, easy to use security system is proof of its value, and it has saved me thousands of pounds in losses.

“The evidence against him was so strong which is thanks to the investment the owner made in this technology and the prompt response by call handlers and local officers.

“I hope this acts as a warning to others considering similar actions that businesses are investing in technology which can result in being caught in the act.”

Home Security Cameras Help Police Stop Crime

At the urging of the local police department residents were using their Home Security Cameras to help catch burglars.

Last week a crime was committed in a Chicago suburb. The incident was captured on a home surveillance system. The local police chief is asking other residents in the area who have security surveillance systems to check their cameras too.

“The block watch program was started last month. Hinsdale residents who have security systems with cameras are asked to let the police department know so their help can be enlisted when police are trying to solve neighborhood crimes.

The voluntary program asks residents to register their outdoor surveillance cameras with the police department. If a crime occurs in the neighborhood police will ask residents to check their systems to see if they captured a picture that may aid in the investigation.

There is no charge to participate in the program and program participants are kept confidential, he said.”

Colleges Challenged To Get Tough On Assaults

Here’s a story from the Kansas City Star about how colleges are showing much more interest in Violence Against Women. The gist of the story is that a lot more effort is being put into campus sexual assaults, how they are investigated and how they are prosecuted.

Nationwide campuses are being investigated for violations of title IX which jeopardizes financial support from the feds. Schools now have a vested interest in complying with the law. But it’s not all their fault.

“With a national dialogue focused on getting more students to report such incidents and having schools act on the complaints, a college’s record of response might eventually affect how it’s viewed by potential students and their parents.

In an open letter to U.S. News & World Report, a dozen members of Congress suggest the magazine consider how a college handles reports of sexual violence when forming its annual ranking of best colleges.

How a college fares could be a blow to its revenues if students start bypassing schools that don’t step up their fight.

It has been estimated that as many as 30 to 40% of all women will be sexually assaulted in her four years at a University. There are many things that young women can do to prevent being assaulted, but one of the easiest to do is to get a self-defense product such as a Taser.
