Miss USA Ignites Firestorm Over Sexual Assaults On Campus

Recently crowned Miss USA got some issues on college sexual assaults all wrong and ignited a firestorm in the process. Not a good start!

In a Q&A section of the pageant she addressed the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. She basically said “More awareness (of the issue) is very important so that women can learn to protect themselves.” She encouraged young women to learn how to defend themselves. Of course, that’s the position we have been espousing for years. But that does not address the issue which is a complex problem to be sure.

More than one in four women on a college campus will be assaulted in her time there. So it is a big problem.

Universities need to do more to; raise awareness of the issue on campus, improve reporting, strengthen penalties and protect victims better.

In the meantime, young women need to carry self-defense products with them at all times on campus and actually everywhere they go.

We heartily recommend a keychain pepper spray because it is much more likely to be with you wherever you go.

College Rankings-Should They Include Rape And Assault Statistics?

There was a story recently on the National Public Radio blog that asked the question “should college rankings include crime statistics on campus?

The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report are the two most widely read and respected sources for ranking colleges across the country. They rank everything from the quality of dorms, social life and even the quality of education. Who’d a thunk it? But, so far, neither one of them has opted to include rape nor assault crime numbers as part of their rankings.

That may soon be changing with a heightened emphasis on this crime that is so underreported. Even the White House is getting into the act with Pres. Obama announcing the formation of a task force to investigate sexual assaults on campus.

The inclusion of this information would greatly help students and their families get an accurate picture of what the climate is on campus in regard to sexual assault. You sure won’t get it by asking the University.

“In a blog post late last month, U.S. News responded, saying it ‘does not factor in overall campus life or culture, whether positive or negative, including campus crimes or reporting of sexual violence’ in its rankings.”

Home Security Tips-Think Like A Criminal

The Uniform Crime Report published by the FBI reported that there were more than 8.9 million property crimes committed in 2013. Most home burglaries can be classified as random acts-not planned events. 98% of burglaries are committed by what we would call “amateurs” usually young kids who don’t have a job, are bored to death and looking for some easy money to buy drugs.

In developing a home security strategy it’s helpful to think like a criminal-look at weaknesses of your home from a criminal’s point of view. Here are a few questions that criminal might ask himself before he burglarizes your home.

Is The Home Occupied?

Most burglaries are committed during the day. But if a burglar thinks someone is in the house he will pick another target.

Is There An Alarm System?

In a recent study of convicted burglars 60% indicated that the presence of an alarm system will cause them to seek an alternate target. If there was a sign in the front yard warning of the security system 75% of those interviewed in this study indicated they would choose another target.

Are There Any Witnesses?

Burglars don’t want to be discovered, so they look for hiding places around lower-level doors and windows. Eliminate these hiding places and you will be much better off.

“By thinking like a burglar and using enhanced technology to reinforce security at home, homeowners can protect their property and keep their family safe from crime.”

The Electronic Watchdog is a motion activated alarm that gives off the sound of a barking dog when the protected area is entered. It is one of the most effective home security alarms available. Burglars don’t like dogs!

College Assaults Starting To Get More Attention

Here is an opinion piece from CNN and editorial writer Mel Robbins about campus sexual assaults.

In the editorial she makes the point that colleges sweep sexual assaults under the rug, but that it is students that bring the issue to light. Victims of sexual assault on college campus feel shame, guilt and fear. Often when they try and report it to authorities they are minimized by these authorities.

The statistics show that one out of every five women will be assaulted in her four years at a University. Robbins says that the reason so many women haven’t come forward to report this crime until now is because victims assume nothing would happen and to a large extent that is correct.

But it appears that things are changing in the college scene and victims are getting their concerns heard. Among other things they conclude that there was a need for policy of improvement and reform. They also concluded that until rape prevention is addressed it simply isn’t enough.

Sporting Events And Domestic Violence

This is a story about how Domestic Violence heats up when there’s football game going on. Football, not as we know it in the United States, but rather soccer as it is known throughout the world. Right now the World Cup has kicked off in Brazil, so people around the globe are asking questions about the connection between sporting events and domestic violence and abuse.

The main reasons that people believe there is a connection is because of the increased tensions that so many people have when watching matches and the excessive alcohol consumption. That creates an environment where perpetrators of abuse are more likely to commit them.

“This doesn’t mean that football causes domestic violence – in the vast majority of cases, domestic violence will already be present in the relationship, whether that is in the form of psychological, financial, emotional, physical or sexual abuse. What events like the World Cup do is act as an excuse for perpetrators to commit physical violence, and lower their inhibitions so that the violence is more extreme.”

Common Sense Burglary Prevention Tips

Home burglary is one of the easiest crimes to commit which is one reason why it is so common with one out of every six homes being targeted on an annual basis. An astonishing close to 60% of all burglaries are committed through unlocked doors or windows. Here are some other common sense burglary prevention tips.

  1. Make sure all your entrances to your home are well lit including your driveway yard and then areas around your home.
  2. Trim lower-level trees and shrubs to eliminate hiding places.
  3. If you have a garage, make sure you use it for your car and keep your garage door closed.
  4. Burglars will only spend a minimal amount of time trying to get inside your home. So it makes sense to make it as difficult as possible. Start by locking all your doors and windows.
  5. Install alarms on all your doors and windows. That way if a burglar does try to break in, you will be scared away by the sound sometimes as loud as 130 dB.
  6. Consider getting some Fake Security Cameras they are a fraction of the cost of the real thing and work to deter a burglary.

Campus Sexual Assaults-Colleges Need To Do More!

This story from the Buffalo News discusses the need for Colleges to do more when it comes to campus sexual assaults. Read the whole story HERE.

This topic is received variety lately, especially after the White House jumped in a couple months ago establishing a task force to investigate the topic.

”There is a growing effort involving social justice practices, social media and the kind of activism not seen in years that has resulted in groups of brave women speaking out against sexual assault on college campuses.”

The story makes the point that just as those who serve in the military “college students should not have to live under the threat of sexual assault by their colleagues.” They go on to say that when an assault is reported to officials there should be swift action in terms of an investigation and prosecution of the crime.

Unfortunately that has not been the case on college campuses which is why there has been so much student activism.

Right now 55 colleges and universities are being investigated over their handling of complaints of sexual abuse on campus. Those institutions are big and small, public and private: campus sexual assaults knows no bounds.

“Alcohol may be one factor in some campus sexual assaults. But the use of alcohol does not make sexual assault any less of a crime, and does not absolve colleges of their responsibility to take the appropriate action.”

We have always recommended that women everywhere carry a self-defense product such as a keychain pepper spray.
