Where Is The Prevention Talk?

Here is an Op-Ed Piece on Campus Assaults that raises the question about whether or not is something missing.

Activists understandably pursue remedies from local to national levels, yet the problem persists.

College campus sexual assaults have been hot topics for many years producing much activity and even more legislation in a feeble attempt to curb the assaults. In 2010, President Obama required federal agencies to make domestic and sexual violence a priority. The president signed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act in 2013. On Sept. 19, 2014, the president launched his “It’s On Us” campaign, combating sexual assault on college campuses.

Much of the attention and funding has been directed to after-the-fact investigation and treating the victim more humanely. While there is a prevention component to each legislative package, grant or project, perhaps something is being overlooked.

“The dynamics of college life appear to fuel the problem, as many survivors are victims of what’s called ‘incapacitated assault’: they are abused while drunk, under the influence of drugs, passed out, or otherwise incapacitated.”

Campus life is what it is with binge drinking, multiple sexual partners, drug use and other indiscretions which indeed lead to incapacitated victims.

While there is no foolproof solution to sexual assaults on and around campuses, there are ways to lower the likelihood of victimization. In the distant past, young women on campus were afforded the privacy and protection of female-only dorms, curfews and no male visitors in dorm rooms.

Nearly 30% of all women have been sexually assaulted in their years in a University. That statistic is bad enough but even more glaring is that 72% of all campus victims admit to having been drunk when attacked. Nearly 90% of all assailants are known to the victims-they are classmates.

Women have a right to be safe on college and university campuses so they can pursue their educations.
Part of the problem is that less than 10% of all sexual assaults ever get reported which actually works to embolden other young men to commit the crime.

Illinois Latest State To Consider Hidden Cameras In Nursing Homes

According to this story in the Fiscal Times Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan has heard enough elder abuse nightmare stories that she is drafting legislation will be introduced in 2015 that will allow Illinois nursing home residents and their families to put cameras in their rooms to help protect them.

“Residents and family members should have the option, for their own peace of mind, to monitor what is taking place,” said Madigan. “If something goes wrong, you can see what actually happened.”

Four other states -New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington-allow residents to maintain cameras in their rooms. In Maryland, cameras can be placed in a resident’s room, but only if the facility permits them, according to state guidelines.

While no one keeps data on the total number of allegations of abuse or neglect in nursing homes, an August report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General’s office found that 85 percent of nursing facilities reported at least one such allegation to the agency in 2012. It estimated that about 60,000 allegations involved staffers abusing or neglecting residents.

About 1.5 million people reside in nearly 16,000 nursing homes nationwide at any given time.

Home Security Video Catches Bad Guy

This is a story from TV station KOMO in Seattle about a home burglar who was caught on camera while committing the crime.

Detectives are looking at the home surveillance video after a thief went into a homeowner’s garage, got into his car and stole his wallet.

The homeowners closed the garage door but apparently the family cat triggered a sensor that reopened it.

“About 15 minutes later, home surveillance cameras photographed a young man wearing a red long-sleeved shirt, khaki-colored pants, and a black winter hat. On the video, the man is is seen walking up to the house and entering the garage.”

The homeowner had installed surveillance cameras several years ago after someone had gone through the families’ belongings in the garage.

He didn’t realize his credit card was stolen until he got an email alert from his bank.

If you have installed security cameras around your home and are victim of a home burglary, you have a 50% better chance of catching the bad guys and getting your stolen property back. Police can use the video as an important tool in catching home burglars.

Parking Lot Assaults

This is a story from the Minneapolis Star Tribune about incidents that happened a few hours apart in the same downtown parking ramp where two women were assaulted. Assaults on women in parking areas and lots are actually the second most common place for women to be assaulted.

The assailant was chased from one parking ramp by bystanders after the second attack. The two attacks occurred in close proximity to each other and within hours of each other so police are suspicious that it was the same assailant.

The best way for women to defend themselves against any kind of an assault in a parking area is with a self-defense product. We particularly recommend items that are on keychains because it is more likely to be with you wherever you go. There is a new product out that is a powerful stun device that comes with a keychain attachment.

Best Known Burglary Suspect At It Again

One of the best known burglary suspects in the greater Dallas Texas area is a man by the name of Larry Don Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins has an Impressive Criminal Resume that includes 81 offenses filed, 31 arrests, 6 felonies and yet he continues to be released from jail.

He is the reputed ringleader of local safe burglars. Authorities have been frustrated for years, because they keep arresting him… and he keeps getting out. How does he get into these safes? The old-fashioned way! He and his fellow gang members beat the door in.

He was the recent target of the safe burglary task force. He has been caught time and time again but manages to elude jail and slip through the system. He is a colorful character, according to police, driving high-end luxury vehicles, bragging about being the “King South Dallas” and claiming to be a millionaire.

When he was arrested last month, he was out on $250,000 bond and was involved in a pending organized crime case in another county.

This time when he was arrested he was caught on video surveillance camera. Slamdunk you say?

Not so fast! His high-powered attorney feels certain he will be released soon.

Not everyone can afford expensive security cameras. That is where fake security cameras come in.

This Fake Security Camera is an actual surveillance camera housing with the insides removed. It has flashing red LED light and includes everything you need to mount it including mounting brackets, screws and an authentic looking video cable. New Safety Measures At Purdue

This is a story about new safety measures that are being put into place at the Purdue campus following the wave of panic that swept across the campus in January when student Cody Cousins murdered classmate Andrew Boldt.

According to the story, by the time classes began in August, Purdue safety administrators had acted on many of the recommendations outlined in an April 28 report submitted by an ad hoc panel of faculty and staff which reviewed the university’s emergency response systems.

The biggest change was a “system that sends one warning message simultaneously through text, Twitter, Facebook, pop-ups on 3,000 classroom and lab desktop computers, the Boiler TV network in residence halls, the campus safety web page and emergency beacons installed in 27 large classrooms.”
In test done before school started the system works surprisingly well according to one official. The notifications give people a chance to think how they would react in different situations.

We have always recommended that women especially on a college campus carry a self-defense product such as a keychain pepper spray. One way you can protect yourself anywhere is with this Streetwise Keychain Pepper Spray that is rated at 87% stronger than competing brands and contains a UV marking dye. It is one of the few pepper sprays that can actually be sprayed from inside its case which makes access faster and easier. The safety lock presents accidental discharge.

Jewelry Stolen In Home Burglary

Here is a story from Sussex County in jolly old England where home was broken into and the homeowner’s jewelry was stolen.

In addition to the jewelry an Apple MacBook computer was stolen. Police are looking for witnesses. A gold ladies watch with a small round face with gold leaves for the strap was stolen, a ring similar to that in the photo as well as some earrings.

Of particular sentimental value to the victim was a Pandora charm bracelet similar to that in the photo but without the dangling heart. The charms on the bracelet included a pram, a penguin and a present.

Sussex Police launched Operation Magpie to tackle burglary across the county.

One of the best ways to protect your valuables such as jewelry cash and credit cards is with a diversion safe such as this Libby Can of green beans that has a hollowed out interior to hide smaller valuables. “Most burglars spend less than six minutes inside a victim’s home and only check the most obvious places for valuables. These unique “safes” allow you to hide valuables in the last place a thief would think to look – inside common household products.”
