Unlocked Doors And Windows Help Burglars

Out in Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach Police released surveillance images in hopes of identifying two suspects in a beachfront home burglary and urged residents to be more vigilant about locking doors and windows in light of a spike in residential and vehicle break-ins.

The burglary occurred at a multi-story home in the 100 block of The Strand, at First Street, on Feb. 7 about 5:30 p.m., said Detective Traci Navarrette of the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

“There was nobody home at the time and they attempted to force entry and were unsuccessful, but then they found an unlocked door,” Navarrette said. “Unfortunately, that’s a common theme. We’re getting reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles or residences where windows or doors were unlocked.”

Navarrette said the entire South Bay region “has had a spike in residential burglaries, as well as thefts from vehicles.”

“We can’t hit the point home enough — people are busy and (some of) these homes are large, but we’re asking that people lock their doors and windows when they’re not home. And if

Burglary Spree Sparks Home Security Warnings

This story comes to us from the Western Gazette in United Kingdom and is about a home burglary spree that is sparking warnings from local police about home security.

Local police are urging people in Sherborne to review their home security following a burglary in Gainsborough Drive.

Police believe entry was gained by smashing a PVC panel on a side door and then forcing it open.

It is uncertain exactly what was taken but it looks like TV and jewelry at this early stage of the investigation.

Local police are telling residents “Please take this opportunity to review your home security arrangements. Consideration of an intruder alarm or dummy box, along with lights on timer switches will help provide a visible deterrent.”

Burglar Alarm Scares Off Burglars

New Orleans police have arrested five teens in connection with three burglaries this week in New Orleans. The first burglary happened on a Monday and surveillance video showed the suspect throwing a brick into a glass window of a rear door. The suspects took off when they heard a Burglar alarm sound which scared them away.

Detectives are in the process of gathering evidence that might link the suspects to other burglaries in the area.

Burglar alarms have been proven to be one of the biggest deterrents to burglary because most burglars believe it or not are first or second time offenders and are not used to hearing the sounds of a burglar alarm.

Burglary Prevention Tips

Here’s a story about crime in Beloit where the police chief reports that Burglary Numbers Are Steady compared to 2013. The police chief also noted that most burglars historically are between the ages of 15 and 20 who steal until they get caught. The main motivation behind this is to get money for drugs.

The police chief, Capt. Dan Risse, said residents should ensure their belongings are secure and suggested taking photos and writing down serial numbers for property.

He offered some other tips on home security and burglary prevention.

“• Be sure to lock all your doors when you are away from home, even for a short period of time. This should include the garage doors and windows.
• Don’t place presents and valuable items in front of a window where burglars can see them easily.
• Consider a home security system, such as burglar alarms or security cameras.
• If you are going to be away from home for a few days or weeks, let your neighbors know and let the police know.
• Be a good neighbor and watch out for the people who live around you. Report any suspicious activities to the police. Take down license plate numbers of cars or trucks that look suspicious.
• If you encounter suspicious door-to-door solicitors, report them to the police. They may be checking out your home for a burglary later.
• Consider forming a Neighborhood Watch organization in your neighborhood.”
