Unlocked Doors And Windows Help Burglars

Out in Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach Police released surveillance images in hopes of identifying two suspects in a beachfront home burglary and urged residents to be more vigilant about locking doors and windows in light of a spike in residential and vehicle break-ins.

The burglary occurred at a multi-story home in the 100 block of The Strand, at First Street, on Feb. 7 about 5:30 p.m., said Detective Traci Navarrette of the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

“There was nobody home at the time and they attempted to force entry and were unsuccessful, but then they found an unlocked door,” Navarrette said. “Unfortunately, that’s a common theme. We’re getting reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles or residences where windows or doors were unlocked.”

Navarrette said the entire South Bay region “has had a spike in residential burglaries, as well as thefts from vehicles.”

“We can’t hit the point home enough — people are busy and (some of) these homes are large, but we’re asking that people lock their doors and windows when they’re not home. And if

Barking Dog Stops Burglar

Here’s a story from our neighbors across the pond in England about how a burglar who has a tremendous history with the local police department was confronted by homeowners after he entered their house and stole a tablet computer. The homeowners were alerted to the burglar by their Barking dog.

But their dog started barking which led to them going into the kitchen where they saw the defendant standing by the patio doors holding their tablet computer. The burglar eventually threw the tablet at the homeowners and ran away but not before begging them to not call police. You see he had a long rap sheet and was well known to local cops.

Burglary Prevention Tips

Here’s a story about crime in Beloit where the police chief reports that Burglary Numbers Are Steady compared to 2013. The police chief also noted that most burglars historically are between the ages of 15 and 20 who steal until they get caught. The main motivation behind this is to get money for drugs.

The police chief, Capt. Dan Risse, said residents should ensure their belongings are secure and suggested taking photos and writing down serial numbers for property.

He offered some other tips on home security and burglary prevention.

“• Be sure to lock all your doors when you are away from home, even for a short period of time. This should include the garage doors and windows.
• Don’t place presents and valuable items in front of a window where burglars can see them easily.
• Consider a home security system, such as burglar alarms or security cameras.
• If you are going to be away from home for a few days or weeks, let your neighbors know and let the police know.
• Be a good neighbor and watch out for the people who live around you. Report any suspicious activities to the police. Take down license plate numbers of cars or trucks that look suspicious.
• If you encounter suspicious door-to-door solicitors, report them to the police. They may be checking out your home for a burglary later.
• Consider forming a Neighborhood Watch organization in your neighborhood.”
