Campus Sexual Assaults Still A Problem

Here is a story from the Boston Globe about Campus Sexual Assaults.

One American has likely been raped in the period of time it takes to count to 100 and chances are, that person is between the ages of 18 and 24. Chances are, that person is in college.

The odds of being sexually assaulted on a college campus — a mind-blowing one in five — have at this point been quoted almost to the point of dangerous irrelevance. The nearly 20 percent of college students who have been sexually assaulted somehow became a number without a face, a truth presumed inevitable and thus unworthy of much attention. For these survivors, the memory of sexual assault doesn’t fade — and the struggle continues past the closed door or rape kit.

Of the 135 rapes reported to Harvard between 2009 and 2013, only 10 resulted in expulsions. Eighty-eight percent of women raped on campus do not report the crime.

In their film, they try to get at why rape is so rampant on college campuses and why schools continue to protect student rapists. They speak with survivors, campus police, administrators, advocates, and activists, all of whom put forth a similar thesis: Universities cannot risk the public relations disaster, potential lawsuits, and financial losses that might result from being associated with a “rape problem.”

NFL Ravens Criticized For Lack Of Domestic Violence Policy

From MSN comes this story about the pro football Ravens and their lack of a Domestic Violence Policy.

The NFL didn’t really have much in place in way of a domestic violence policy before 2014. That all quickly changed in large part thanks to Ray Rice and the Baltimore Ravens.

The criticism comes from Ravens owner Steve Biscoitti who said “I think that we were pretty stupid not to recognize domestic violence as a category by itself, I’m embarrassed to say that they were lumped together. So, I’m happy that we found ourselves comfortable taking that categorically and putting it into at the top of the list as something that is just unacceptable.”

Bisciotti also said the Ravens now take into consideration off-field issues — particularly any history of domestic violence — when scouting for the draft or preparing for free agency.

Women who are in a domestic abuse situation should carry a nonlethal self-defense product with them at all times.

Campus Assaults Everywhere-Report

This story about Campus Sexual Assaults claims it happens on every college campus, and it is notoriously under-reported.

Now, a New York senator and governor are pushing similar initiatives to address the issue, with the state education system also taking steps.

A strengthened version of the Campus Accountability and Safety Act is earning bipartisan support, and Gillibrand called it “a new path forward to protect students by flipping the incentives and holding schools accountable.”

The proposed federal legislation would:

  • Establish campus resources and support services for student survivors.
  • Ensure that college staff meet minimum training standards to address sexual assault.
  • Increase transparency so students, parents and the public have an accurate picture of the problem and how it is being addressed.
  • Require a uniform student disciplinary process.

It addresses the big needs: uniform policies across all college campuses, better protocols for reporting sexual assaults, increased knowledge about rights and defined training requirements.

Cougar Breeding Area Discovered

Ecologists have discovered at least nine different Mountain Lions south of Livermore in the Sunol/Ohlone Regional Wilderness in the East Bay hills in an area east of Fremont.

Mountain lions are commonly called cougars and populate mostly the Western United States. They are the second largest feline animal in the Americas next to the Jaguar. They are solitary predators that use their leaping ability to ambush prey. Stealth and speed are their main characteristics in an attack. They have been known to leap as high as 15 feet and jump as far as 40 feet which seems unbelievable.

“That’s a phenomenal density for that area,” said Carolyn Jones with the East Bay Regional Park District. Jones believes the mountain lion population is a good sign of a healthy habitat. “It’s an area that’s very wild and there’s plenty of deer for them to eat. They seem very happy.”

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirms that attacks on humans are rare with only three fatal attacks in the last 30 years.

Campus Accountability And Safety Act Re-Introduced

Here is a story about how a group of 12 senators, both Democratic and Republican are joining forces to re-introduce the Campus Accountability and Safety Act to help combat Campus Sexual Assaults

Right now Sen. Gillibrand, D-N.Y is sponsoring the bill which would protect students and hold schools accountable.

“Under the legislation, colleges and universities would be required to designate confidential advisers to assist sexual assault survivors. The confidential adviser’s responsibilities would include providing survivors with options for reporting the alleged crime and coordinating support services.”

Among some of the proposed changes are strengthening the campus disciplinary process. Schools would be required to provide written notification to the individual accused of the offense and the victim if the decision is made to move forward with a campus disciplinary proceeding.
