Murder In Domestic Violence Cases No Mystery

Here is a sad story about Domestic Violence.

In less than a week, two separate cases of alleged family violence have left three parents dead and their children traumatized.

“No child deserves to grow up knowing that daddy killed mommy.”

Both incidents resulted in a mother’s death, allegedly at the hands of their husband.

However, he said it’s unclear what, if anything, the kids may have seen that night.

Immediate intervention is critical for these children to somehow help them begin the healing process.

Unfortunately, domestic violence is number one cause of death of a spouse. It is no wonder when the spouses killed that the number one suspect is the other spouse.

Campus Assaults Are More Frequent Than Believed

This is a story the claims that Campus Assaults happen more often than you may think. National statistics show 20 percent of college students will suffer a sexual assault during their time on campus.

But, now a bi-partisan group of senators is looking to change that.
A group of senators who introduced the “Campus Accountability and Safety Act” Legislation that would hold colleges and universities accountable for reporting and addressing sexual assaults on campus. i

In addition to holding schools accountable for reporting, the legislation would provide the victim of a sexual assault with a confidential adviser, on campus, who answers only to that victim.

They got input from victims, law enforcement and colleges and universities across the country which they say, will keep campuses safer, and help families make an informed decision when choosing which school to attend.

Any woman who is on college campus does not carry a self-defense weapon with them is foolish, at least in our opinion. Statistics show that one out of every four women on a college campus will be assaulted at some point in her time there.

Woman Assaulted And Robbed

A Greenville woman was beaten, her purse and cell phone stolen and she was left in an empty parking lot in a parking lot assault.

A woman with torn clothes, a bruised eye and deep scratches on her neck flagged down a Greenville-West Salem Township patrolman in the parking lot of a Main Street convenience store in the borough, police said.

The woman said Mathew P. Molke, 27, of Conneaut Lake and Bethann M. Staggs, 31, of Atlantic picked her up at her Greenville home. As they traveled east on Hadley Road near Sixth Avenue in Hempfield Township, Molke asked her for gas money and she gave him $4, police said.

Molke finally wrestled the purse away from her, while Staggs continued hitting her, police said. The pair then left the victim lying on the ground and took off in the 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse, police said. The victim flagged down a motorist who took her to the convenience store, police said.

She was treated at a local hospital for a broken finger, a bruised shoulder and torn ligaments in her neck and back, police said.

A warrant for Molke’s arrest lists his charges as aggravated assault, robbery and theft; Staggs faces charges of simple and aggravated assault and robbery.

Parking lots are one of the most common places for an assault on women. We encourage young girls and women everywhere to carry a self-defense product with them such as a stun gun or pepper spray.

College Officials In Denial About Campus Assaults

This is a story from Bloomberg about Campus Sexual Assaults. In recent surveys of U.S. College presidents, few admit to having the issue of campus sexual assaults at their own school. Only 6% of them said it’s a significant problem for them. While 80% said sexual assault is prevalent at their school.

College presidents overwhelmingly disagree that sexual assault is prevalent on their campuses, even though a third think it’s a problem in general

The survey got responses from presidents at 338 public institutions and 262 private nonprofits. About 26 percent don’t think sexual assault at school is common, and 42 percent are ambivalent.

Of the presidents surveyed, 77 percent said their school does a good job protecting women from sexual assault—even as the growing number of federal investigations suggests colleges have erred under Title IX, the federal law that bans schools from discriminating on the basis of gender.

The survey suggests that presidents are in denial about the problem.

We are wondering whether these college presidents can read. There’s been an enormous amount of publicity about campus sexual assaults in the last two or three years. Currently there are 101 schools that are under investigation by the federal government for violation of title IX. That is hardly insignificant.

How Campus Assaults Are (mis)Treated

Today’s news about Campus Sexual Assaults comes from the Huffington Post.

The story provides an excellent example of how sexual assaults on college campuses are handled. A young woman was sexually assaulted in her dorm room. She reported it to campus authorities and filed an official report. But she wasn’t sure that she wanted to see the attacker punished.

Officials suggested a mediation session, something explicitly prohibited by the U.S. Department of Education in a letter to all colleges.

The result of the mediation was that the student took responsibility for what he did and was given a slight slap on the wrist for “disorderly conduct.” He was given a year of probation. But the assailant and the victim still see each other in classes and on campus-something that’s very traumatizing for the victim.

If women would carry a self-defense product with them such as stun gun or a pepper spray they would be able to defend themselves in these kinds of circumstances.

Arming Coeds Not The Answer To Campus Assaults

This NY Times Article on Campus Assaults is questioning the recent proposal that arming female students will put an end to campus sexual assaults. Right now only nine states allow students to carry guns on campus. But there is a push to change that.

“Some experts in sexual assault say that college women are typically assaulted by someone they knew, sometimes a friend, so even if they had access to their gun, they would rarely be tempted to use it.”

We would agree with that assessment. Statistics show that nine out of every 10 assailants in a campus sexual assault situation is known to the victim. The deadly force of a handgun is rarely justified in any situation, let alone one where two friends are together.

“It reflects a misunderstanding of sexual assaults in general,” said John D. Foubert, an Oklahoma State University professor and national president of One in Four, which provides educational programs on sexual assault to college campuses.

Domestic Violence Warning Signs

From TV station WPRI in PROVIDENCE, R.I. comes this Domestic Violence Warning Sign. Statistics show that over one out of every 10 domestic violence assaults is a homicide. Doctors who are on the front lines are exposing those red flags that can signal a victim as at risk of being killed.

“According to a study from the National Institute of Justice, intimate partner homicides make up 50 percent of all murders of women in the United States, and in 70 to 80 percent of domestic violence murders – the man physically abused the woman before the murder.”

  1. Is anyone threatening or hurting you?
  2. Is anyone hitting, kicking, choking or hurting you physically?
  3. Is anyone forcing you to do something sexually you don’t want to do?

There is also a checklist to help identify women who may be at risk of being killed.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University tell us that certain types of injuries or actions are a red flag.

Here are some of the warning signs:

  • A victim is threatened with a weapon.
  • A partner verbally threatens to kill her.
  • A victim is forced to have sex with her partner.

The most deadly physical clue – signs of choking or strangulation.

In a relationship where a woman has been strangled once it is ten times more likely to end in a homicide. Biting and scratching, kicking and other aggressive behaviors could likely be precursors to a deadly end.
